Guitar Busted? Learn How to Fix it

Mar. 24th, 2007 | 03:00 pm

Originally published at The Placebo. You can comment here or there.

The Placebo presents a workshop taught by Elliot Hallmark:

Topics Covered Include:

  • How to read circuit diagrams
  • Electric guitar theory (or how its supposed to work)
  • Common guitar wiring layouts (or what it might have looked like before someone else messed it up)
  • Soldering technique (or, how not to do an embarassing job on your friend’s guitar)
  • Diagnosing and fixing common problems (sound cuts in and out, crackles when you adjust the volume, and just plain doesn’t work).

London Calling parody

You are encouraged to bring your malfunctioning guitars, basses and other pick-up based electronic instruments (they’re all the same, but keyboards, amps, and stuff are completely different). You can fix them at the workshop with a little help. Also, bring your cables and we can even give your mics a go. If you do bring something to fix, bring whatever tools you need to open it.

Note: We’re not saying it’s impossible to fix your basket-case guitar, but there won’t be time in this workshop to do complete rebuilds.

When: Saturday, March 24 at 3pm
Where: The Ink People, 411 Twelfth Street, Eureka, next door to the Muni (map)
Cost: $2-$5 sliding scale (as always, your $2 annual Placebo membership is required)

What: The G8 Info Tour

“Once a year the 8 richest nations meet behind closed doors in secret with no publized agenda or published minutes, to discuss the fate of the world. They’ve been making empty promises for decades about improving the environment, poverty in Africa, and lots more, but the fact is that the G8 is not the solution to these ills, it is the problem!

We are preparing in Germany for large scale protests against the G8 meeting this June 6-8, 2007, and plan to come tell you about what’s going on here. We have done over 200 presentations in 25+ countries since November 2005, and are now coming to your town!”

Placebo HRC

Mar. 6th, 2007 | 05:30 pm

Originally published at The Placebo. You can comment here or there.

The Placebo Harm Reduction Collective is a DIY self help/ support group for those who want to deal with drug addiction and depression. If you would like to make changes in your life, continue to stay sober, or have support dealing- this is a confidential and compassionate environment. If you are part of another support group or drug treatment program already, you are still welcome to come.

Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies that reduce negative consequences of drug use, incorporating a spectrum of strategies from safer use, to managed use to abstinence. Harm reduction strategies meet drug users where they’re at, addressing conditions of use along with the use itself. Because harm reduction demands that interventions and policies designed to serve drug users reflect specific individual and community needs, there is no universal definition of or formula for implementing harm reduction. More about Harm Reduction at harmreduction.org

When: Tuesday, March 6th, 5:30-7pm
Where: The Placebo, 47B West 3rd Street, Eureka (near the new CO-OP; enter via the Alley between 3rd and 4th)

The HRC is a sub group of The Placebo. Meetings are open to all ages, and are created for Humboldt County’s diverse music, art, film, and literature scene. Knitting Circle Art Hang

Oct. 13th, 2006 | 04:00 pm

Originally published at The Placebo. You can comment here or there.

We’re going to have the knitting club thingy — what do I have to do to get name suggestions, must there be prizes? — every 2nd Friday of the month. The general Art Hang thingies (at which, I hasten to add, knitting is welcome) proceed apace every Friday from 4-8pm.
(Except for the days directly before Arts Alive when the space just might be too full of E2 folks Hanging Art for there to be group harmony. I know that’s a tad confusing, so I’ll keep on posting notices here every week.)

To sum: This week? KNITTING (and whatever else people want to get up to. um… within limits which may be decided on the spot)

When: Friday, October 13 from 4pm till the Electric Melanoma show starts
Where: The Placebo / E2 - 47B W 3rd St, between A and Commercial (map)
Cost: Free! (but bring your own supplies) Donations, she is always welcome.

We’re having the 2nd meeting of the Placebo’s knitting circle thingy (no name yet; open to suggestions): learn how to knit, purl, switch yarn colors, etc. If you already know how, teach someone else or work on your own project. All ages and genders welcome!

Of course, if you just wanna hang out and talk or read/write/draw/dance/spin in circles till you get dizzy/etc., you can do that, too.

When: Friday September 8, 4-8pm
Where: The Placebo / E2 47B West 3rd St in Eureka (by the new Co-op)
Cost: Free! Bring your own supplies (beginning knitters can use our needles and yarn)

You can make the scene happen by being part of the core decision making at the Placebo. Decide when Bummerfest will happen, how many shows needed per month to pay rent, whether to buy a new piece of equipment or not - it’s the stuff that’s not obvious at shows, but necessary to keep Placebo going.

The next generation of DIY scenesters starts here! This is your scene too, take care of it!
